My search for a cheap fun car that I can take the family with me in, hasn’t gone too well so far. Today’s contestant, a rust free ‘95 Caprice 9C1, was undone by it’s owners penchant for smoking in it. My wife has a dog’s nose, so that was a no-go.
Back to the search. I found an !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! with a manual trans in my price range. It’s got a 3.2 V6, which I know literally nothing about. I’ve always liked the first gen CTS, and this seems like it would be something I could have fun tossing around a rally-cross course, but is this motor too gutless to have any fun with?
What say Oppo?

I feel like the 3.2 was timing belted and not very reliable. The 3.6 is really the best motor for these short of the V8 in the V, and even that had timing chain issues.

Bad interior, not that reliable.

It would be great to find one with the 3.6. Actually I did, but it “needs work”. Sadly the budget does not allow for a V at this time, but someday ...

I don’t mind the interior. I was prepared to buy a 19 year old ex-cop car tonight after all, but I fear you may be right as to the reliability.

No. The build quality is umm questionable the 3.2 high feature is umm.. not very good. First gen cts’s are cp all the way. And you can trust me I’m a caddy fan boy haha

Well, the only difference that there is is that the Caprice is cool.

At that mileage, if it hasn’t had a complete timing belt job... it’ll need one ASAP. Clutch life may also need to be taken into consideration too.
OTherwise the crazy 54 degree 3.2 V6 is quite smooth and sounds good in the upper ranges. It is not too powerful, but the 3.2 was better overall than the 3.0 from the Catera. Still has the dreaded oil to water oil cooler in the valley I think.

If you don’t get it, you’ll make Ben Rolland cry.
Don’t get it.

Fair enough! You’re biased in favor, and still say no ... That says something!

Good points on the clutch and timing belt life!

Ha-ha!
He might cry if I don’t get this ‘73 Coupe Deville. It’s tempting, and I love it, but I don’t think I’d drive it very much.

I think of first gen CTS’ this way:
It wanted to compete with the 3 series/A4/C class but was so far behind in every category that it never heard the editors laughing it off the standings.

My mother-in-law had an 04 with the 3.6 and an automatic and it was a bit of a mutt to drive. I don’t think I ever found out what tires it had but the traction control would not stop going off in the wet or the snow and it didn’t help to keep it from spinning me around even taking slow gentle turns (think 15 mph.) This is coming from driving plenty of rwd vehicles in the winter on bald all seasons. Even my Miata with summer tires seemed to be better in the winter. All that said it could have all come down to whatever tires the devil put on that car.

I would expect that tires were the culprit in that case. Anyways, Oppo was unanimous against the 3.2 version of the CTS, even Benjamin Rolland said to stay away. When the Caddy guys tells you not to buy a Caddy, you best listen, and I am.
It’s looking like I’m finally going to convince my buddy to sell me his ‘94 Roadmaster wagon :)
